Library Technician (Circulation)

The National Gallery of Art Library is seeking applicants for a student assistant position in the Circulation Section of the Reader Services Department. The primary purpose of the position is to assist with a wide variety of circulation and reader services for Gallery staff and outside readers.

Duties include retrieving materials from the stacks and reshelving returned materials, providing information and instruction on circulation procedures governing use of the Library collection, and maintaining automated and manual departmental files.

Applicants should have a basic knowledge of library collections, online catalogs, and circulation desk procedures, familiarity with using personal computers, an ability to type and file accurately, and an ability to work cooperatively with other staff members and library patrons. Reading knowledge of a Western European language (French, German, or Italian) is desirable.

In order to qualify for this position, an applicant must be registered at least as a half-time student, and be able to provide certification of student status, including a current class schedule. Work schedules will be determined to accommodate the student's class schedule and the Library's work requirements. A typical schedule is 20 hours per week while classes are in session; full-time employment is available during semester and summer breaks. The incumbent earns sick and annual leave based on the amount of hours worked.

Library Technician
GS-1411-6 (Salary range: $33,000 - $42,898 P/A)
Full performance level of this position is GS-08.

Major Duties:
The position is located on the staff of the Deputy Director in the National Gallery of Art Library, Reader Services Division. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the current periodicals reading room. Provides assistance to library users by locating serials and responding to routine inquiries. Adds directories and bibliographic tools to the online serials holdings record as new volumes are received and routes them to the appropriate section of the library. Applies the USMARC holdings format to accessioned serials, including newspapers, and updates holdings information on the library’s online catalog. Assists with the maintenance and use of the library’s auction catalog collection; creates and updates bibliographic records for foreign and domestic auction catalogs following established special database (SCIPIO) guidelines. Prepares temporary bibliographic records for new serials titles as requested by the Acquisitions Section and sends newly received titles to the Cataloging Section for full cataloging by the serials cataloger. Provides support to the auction catalog technician in his/her absence.
